CGCC Presents “Archaeological Evidence for the Origins of Affluence”

November 13, 2008

The Chandler-Gilbert Community College Phi Theta Kappa organization, as part of its Satellite Series, will host “Archaeological Evidence for the Origins of Affluence” via a live satellite feed on Tuesday, November 18 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Room C110 on CGCC’s Pecos Campus.

Dr. Michael Galaty, Associate Professor of Anthropology in the Department of Sociology-Anthropology at Millsaps College, will be featured in this presentation. Galaty will trace the social changes related to affluence that occurred in the Neolithic (“New Stone”) Age, which produced differential control of surplus goods, land, specialized economies, and trade, as well as explore the reasons why humans abandoned prehistoric social hierarchies.

Dr. Galaty received a B.A. with honors in Anthropology from Grinnell College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since 2004, he has directed the Shala Valley Project, which studies the archaeology and history of the territory of the Shala tribe in the northern Albanian high mountains, including their practices of warfare and feud. The Shala Valley Project is supported by major grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information contact Laura Smallwood at (480) 732-7251 or laura.smallwood@cgcmail.maricopa.edu or Ernest Chavez at (480) 857-5141 or ernest.chavez@cgcmail.maricopa.edu.
