The Arizona Department of Health Services certifies all levels of Emergency Medical Technicians in Arizona. To become certified as an EMT in the State of Arizona, you must successfully complete a Department approved training course.
Basic EMT courses are offered at many of the Maricopa Community Colleges. At the completion of the course, you will need to submit an application for certification to AZ DHS and successfully pass the National Registry written examination.
National Registry Testing
In January 2007, National Registry implemented Computer Based Testing for all their written examinations. This process has replaced the traditional paper and pencil testing with a process that promises to offer a "more fair and accurate evaluation of the candidate's competency".
The practical examination process has remained unchanged for approximately the last 10 years. This process consists of multiple skills tests that are presented in a scenario-type format to test the candidate's ability to perform in the pre-hospital setting. For a complete list of the skills sheets used for this testing format, please visit the NR EMT practical skills site.
