Gila River Review

Welcome to the inaugural issue of The Gila River Review, Chandler-Gilbert Community College’s first online art and literary journal, edited entirely by CGCC students, including honors students and members of the CGCC Creative Writing Club.  They’re a tough audience of sharp readers, and I first want to thank them for bringing this effort to life over the course of the last several months.  I also want to extend big thanks to Lesley Cryderman, Ron Slamka, and Diane Yost, who have worked tirelessly to make the journal a fantastic site and addition to CGCC’s web world.  You like the way the journal looks?  Please thank Damien Hernandez, whose artistic vision is a presence all over our college, and we’re so proud to display his talents here.  Finally, I would like to thank Dr. William Guerriero, Vice President of Academic Affairs, for providing the resource of time to complete our first issue.

A final note:  some of the work included is written for mature readers.  You know, “adult content,” which includes sexual content, violence, and rough language.   As a writer and teacher, I’m often asked, “Why does fiction (or poetry or movies) have so much sex and violence?”  Because art, when it’s complex, authentic, and true, works to reflect the complexities of our world and the human condition—which are often brutal, absurd, joyous, and, well, sexy.  So come on in!
