Recently, our East Valley Communities experienced the heartbreak of losing many of our young ones to suicide. These incidents paralleled national deaths revealing the need to cope with the emotional distress following a loss, to be proactive about prevention and awareness while confronting a topic that is still taboo for many.
Over the summer faculty and staff communicated regarding programming for suicide prevention and awareness. Recognizing the common interest of key individuals and campus organizations, a task force was born, in response to death. The task force members voluntarily met with the goal of co-coordinating event calendars and planning efforts. As this idea was born collaborations were established with the greater Chandler-Gilbert community.
CGCC Connects is a task force that provides education and programming related to difficult topics and cultural current events. The mission is to help administration, faculty, staff, students, and the community at large to navigate challenging topics. By taking on large social topics, the task force has a special focus on training, acceptance, and inclusion. During the 2018 - 2019 academic year, the focus will be on Suicide Prevention and Awareness. Join us in an effort to raise awareness of suicide warning signs, to learn more about resources on campus and in the greater community, to gain valuable training and ways to respond.
