                              Message from the President

To all New Adventurers and Presenters,

In our twenty-one years of existence our traditional goal has been to provide quality courses for our members — courses that are thought provoking, entertaining, challenging and rewarding.  As a result of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, New Adventures has been forced to make several difficult decisions about our classes.  The first, in March, was to cancel the remainder of our spring semester classes. 
 
At this time, due to the uncertain future of the growth of COVID-19 and in an abundance of caution, I’m sad to report that NA Governing Council has decided to also cancel the summer semester classes.  In part this decision was based on the risk to our members and presenters of meeting in a classroom environment.  Also, Maricopa Community College’s decision to not hold on campus courses through the summer at any of their campuses forced our decision.   All members and presenters will be notified of this action shortly by separate e-mail blasts.  The Council hopes that you are in agreement with this difficult decision and appreciate the no win choices the Council faced.
 
It is both our hope and our plan to conduct fall classes beginning Monday, September 28.  The normal schedule for signing up presenters and scheduling of member registration will be followed, subject to the decline of the pandemic, the relaxing of large group meeting restrictions, and all decisions from the college’s administration.
 
Of course we send continued good wishes to stay safe and healthy.

New Adventures in Learning members who are at or near retirement, keep their minds active and challenged through fun classes with no tests or grades given.   It's learning for learning's sake, pure and simple!

About New Adventures

A Sun Lakes not-for-profit organization affiliated with Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC), New Adventures began in 1998 and is an all-volunteer, peer-led program with nearly 500 members.

Courses

Diverse and changing topics are offered weekdays during the fall, spring and summer semesters.  Classes include lectures, discussion groups, computer classes and field trips.  Some meet only one time while others meet several times.

Faculty

Classes are presented by volunteers who come from our members and the community at large. Presenters may be retired experts in the field and others who have a keen interest in their topic.

The mission of New Adventures in Learning is to provide a variety of interesting and educational opportunities at a reasonable cost to mature adults of the Southeast Valley.

​Organization and Size

New Adventures is one of the largest lifelong learning organizations in the Phoenix metropolitan area.  It has nearly 500 dues-paying members.
 
It is an independent, self-governing institution operating with Chandler-Gilbert Community Colleges.  Classes are held at CGCC's Sun Lakes Center, which features several classrooms with state-of-the-art equipment.  The college, part of the Maricopa Community College District, provides some logistical support.
 
New Adventures has a Governing Counsel consisting of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, chairs of five standing committees, and at-large members.  The general membership elects officers at the annual meeting.
 
Members pay annual dues.  Dues cover the cost of operations, and are based on the principle that membership should be affordable.
 
Because New Adventures is a volunteer-run organization, dues have remained stable at $50 a year for many years.  Members may take as many classes as they wish under this modest membership fee.  It is one of the least expensive lifelong learning institutes in the nation.
 

​History

In 1998, a small group of Sun Lakes residents began working with Chandler-Gilbert Community College to establish a learning-in-retirement program for mature adults who shared a curiosity and desire for learning.

In November 1998, a few sample classes were presented, and charter memberships were offered the following month.  The college provided various support services over a three-year period of time (1999-2001).  New Adventures gradually assumed responsibility for all external expenses after the three-year period.

The first semester of classes with paid memberships started in January 1999.  For the next decade, New Adventures presented two semesters of classes each year.

After three years of well-attended "Summer Sampler" programs, open to members and non-members alike, New Adventures added a two-month Summer Semester in 2010.  It continues to provide academic and social relief from the heat each summer.

The small size of Sun Lakes Center classrooms inhibited membership growth in the early years.  In 2006, CGCC added a second story to the Center, providing modern, spacious classrooms, including one seating 80 students. The expansion, which opened in early 2007, enabled New Adventures to double its membership within two years.

New Adventures has been successful because of two critical factors–academic support and the organization's system of volunteers.  The steadfast support and encouragement of Chandler-Gilbert Community College has been invaluable.  Large numbers of volunteers put in hundreds of hours of service each semester to ensure the program runs smoothly and fulfills its promise of providing a self-governing, self-sustaining community of lifelong learners.

Many young people can't wait to finish school and get on with "real" life.  But after years devoted to working and raising families, many older people can't wait to get back into the classroom. 

They have discovered the joys of learning for the fun of it.  They have found that taking classes with their peers contributes to better mental and physical health and simply to make their lives more interesting.

Through its wide variety of classes, field trips and roundtable discussions, New Adventures remains true to its founding mission to provide a variety of interesting and educational opportunities at a reasonable cost to mature adults of the Southeast Valley.

As a student at Chandler-Gilbert Community College you will have access to college services such as the library and the computer network, pay student prices at the College's Coyote Fitness Center, Arnett Ward Performing Art Center and Maricopa County Community College District's athletic games and sports programs. You'll also qualify for special student discounts offered by a variety of businesses, area museums and entertainment venues.
