Gila River Review
Gabriel Matthew Granillo

It Must Be Christmas Time Again

Through the bell toll of the heart beat monitor,

Through the freezing air conditioner,

Through the tubes inside of your nostrils,

Through the stench of urine and soap,

Through the missing hair on your balding head,

Through my brother’s deep, hesitant breaths and

My sister’s weeping eyes
Through your cancer infested heart and

My broken one,

Through your chapped, bleeding lips and

Your crooked, rotting teeth,

You smiled.

And it was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.

Gabriel Matthew Granillo:  "I am nineteen years old. I don't consider myself a poet in the least, but that's what I tend to write the most. I play guitar, piano, drums, and I once learned how to play the accordion when I was eleven but I don't remember how to play anymore. I am going to Chandler-Gilbert and plan on transferring to the Walter Crokite School for Journalism. I like to write songs, poems, short stories, and blogs. I moved to Arizona five years ago and I think I've finally accepting being here."
