Types of Financial Aid

Types of Financial Aid

If you need help paying for college, you’ll want to apply for financial aid. But what type? Financial aid comes in several forms, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Review the types of financial aid available at CGCC and then meet with a financial aid specialist to discuss the right option(s) for you.

Student Loans

Loans

Many students choose to borrow money from the federal government or private banks to pay for their education. Loans must be paid back, with interest, but you don’t need to start making payments until you’re no longer a student.

Grants

Grants

Think of grants as gifts from the state, federal government, or your school. They are awarded based on need and do not need to be repaid as long as you meet certain criteria. There are three types of grants available to CGCC students.

Federal Work Study

Work-Study Program

Federal Work-Study provides part-time employment to college students who need to earn money for their education. The program funds jobs on campus or at nearby nonprofit organizations or public entities.

Scholarships

Scholarships

Scholarships are typically funded by individual organizations or private donors and are awarded to students based on academic or other achievements, such as extracurricular activities. These gifts do not need to be repaid.

Private Loan

Private Loans

Private loans are used to help cover the costs of attending college when all other resources have been exhausted. Unlike federal student loans, private loans are not federally guaranteed and the terms and conditions are determined by the private lenders. Private loans typically require a credit check, and you may need a cosigner to qualify.
