Tutoring FAQs

The Learning Center tutors and staff are here to help you succeed. See below for some frequently asked questions about the Learning Center’s services.

Learning Centers are fun, supportive places where registered CGCC students can reinforce what they learn in the classroom, get free tutoring and other resources.

While our Learning Centers are set up to provide support in math, science, and writing full time, we also offer tutoring in other subjects by appointment. Those subjects include accounting, computer programming, Spanish and more.

As long as you’re a currently enrolled CGCC student you’re eligible to receive tutoring and to use our Learning Centers free of charge.

For your convenience, we have Learning Centers at both the Pecos and Williams campuses.

Our Learning Centers are open during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Our hours vary by subject and location.

No. Our Learning Centers are open to students on a drop-in basis and you can get as much help as you need in math, science and writing during business hours. Appointment-based tutoring is limited to two hours per week per course.

To ensure a successful tutoring experience, please review our policies before you visit the Learning Center.

Bring your textbook, class notes and any necessary tools to get your work done. Come prepared with specific questions. Tutoring is a supplement to classroom learning, not a replacement.

At the Writing Center, we can help with research and papers, essays and more. In fact, we’re here to help you with the writing of any class project you have, including math, psychology, education and more.

We can also offer advice on:

  • Topic brainstorming
  • Developing a thesis
  • Supporting research/documentation
  • Organization
  • Writing to a specific audience
  • Establishing a voice
  • Writing for clarity
  • Citations
  • Plagiarism avoidance

If we are not tutoring another student, and time permits, we will help you to the best of our ability. But if you are new to computers, you may find it beneficial to work with the computer lab, where trained computer technicians can assist you.

While we are happy to work with you to understand and apply the rules of grammar and punctuation, we will not edit your papers.

At the Learning Centers, we can answer your questions and help you better understand all levels of mathematics, statistics, physics, anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, microbiology and organic chemistry.

No appointment necessary! Just drop in to the Learning Center during business hours, and you’ll receive assistance on a first-come, first-served basis. When you have a question, just raise your hand so a tutor knows to assist you.

No, we do not provide testing services. Tests are taken in the Testing Center located on the second floor of the Coyote Center.

We do have graphing calculators and copies of current textbooks to use while you’re in the Learning Center. We do not rent any items for use outside of the center. Contact the Mathematics Division if you’re interested in equipment rentals.

CGCC does not provide private tutoring services for hire. For your convenience, we’ve compiled a list of tutors who provide private tutoring off campus. For a copy of this list visit or email the center. CGCC is not responsible for any of the private tutors listed and cannot guarantee the quality of tutoring. Costs and meeting places are your responsibility and may not be held on campus.

Working with other students in a helping role will provide you with some of the most valuable experience you can get during your college years. We’re always looking for knowledgeable and enthusiastic tutors to work in our Learning Centers!
