Jamie Thompson, a first-year mortuary science student at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC), recently attended the Fountain National Academy training in Springfield, MO, a prestigious professional embalming skills program that has taught embalmers from more than 20 countries since its inception in 1990. The Fountain National Academy is an advanced educational institution that provides specialized continuing education for embalmers to enhance the foundational skills learned in mortuary school.

“I chose Mortuary Science because I’ve always been drawn to helping others and working with my hands,” said Thompson. “My path hasn’t been easy. I lost part of my dominant right hand in an accident, and many people told me I wouldn’t be able to do certain things again. I pushed forward, proving to myself and others that I could rise above challenges and follow my calling.”

Thompson is a proud mother who strives to be a role model for her children. “I want to show my children that no matter what life throws at you, you can stay strong, keep going and achieve your dreams,” said Thompson.

Thompson utilizes CGCC’s library resources and online learning tools to stay organized and balance her coursework and family responsibilities. She also credits CGCC faculty and staff for supporting her success. “My professors push me to succeed, but also encourage me when things get tough,” said Thompson. “Their support has helped me believe in myself, even when others doubted me.”

Upon graduation, Thompson plans to take the National Board Exam and start her career as a licensed funeral director and embalmer. Her ultimate career goal is to own or manage her own funeral home, creating a space where families feel supported during their most difficult times.
