Just start with CARE
Whether you're a student looking for support or a faculty or staff member concerned about someone, you don't have to have all the answers. You don't need to know exactly what's wrong or determine what support is needed. You just need to CARE.
A CARE referral is a way to say, “I noticed. I care. Help is available.” Anyone in the CGCC community—students, faculty, and staff—is encouraged to reach out when they're concerned about a student. A referral connects the concern with the CGCC CARE Team, which works to understand the situation, coordinate support, and connect students with resources that can help remove barriers and keep them moving toward their goals. If you need support, start with CARE. If you're concerned about someone, start with CARE.
What is CARE?
CARE is an acronym for:
- Concern for the individual student and the college community
- Assessment by gathering detailed information from involved parties
- Response with interventions and actions that support the student and address safety concerns
- Evaluation of the effectiveness of interventions and reassess as needed
When should you submit a CARE Referral
Consider reaching out when you or you notice a student who:
- Seems distressed or continues to struggle despite attempts to offer support
- Becomes increasingly isolated, withdrawn, irritable, or disconnected
- Is having difficulty participating appropriately in class or other learning environments
- Shows a significant decline in academic performance or attendance
- Expresses feelings of hopelessness or helplessness
- Experiences a significant or concerning change in behavior or mood
- Mentions thoughts of suicide or self-harm
- Makes threats or displays aggression toward themself or others
- Appears unable to care for their basic needs
- Shares that they are experiencing food or housing insecurity
You don't need to wait for a situation to become a crisis. A CARE Referral can be an important first step in connecting you or a student with support.
