Integrative Learning

Learning Through Hands-on Experience

At CGCC, we recognize that learning can take many different forms. We work to create opportunities for students to integrate the knowledge they learn in the classroom into real-world settings.

Integrative learning is a type of learning that encourages students to think across disciplines, and make connections between concepts they learn in the classroom and experiences outside the classroom.

High-Impact Practices

What are HIPs?

About HIPs

High Impact Practices, or HIPs, are research-backed teaching practices that deeply engage students in course materials.

HIPs are proven to increase student outcomes. Students who engage in HIPs have a greater sense of belonging and higher GPAs, and are more likely to continue college and graduate.

Eight key elements of a project or course define what makes a HIP truly high-impact. They are:

  • High Expectations: Faculty establish appropriately high expectations for their students and provide students the tools they need to meet those expectations.
  • Diversity: Students interact with people, ideas or viewpoints that differ from their own.
  • Feedback: Students receive frequent, substantive and timely feedback from their instructors and peers.
  • Interactions With Faculty & Peers: Students regularly collaborate, discuss or interact with their instructors and peers about substantive matters.
  • Real-world Application: Students are given opportunities to apply their learning in a real-world settings.
  • Reflection: Students reflect on what they learned throughout the course.
  • Public Demonstration of Learning: Students are given the opportunity to tell others about their learning.
  • Significant Effort Over Time: HIP courses require students to work hard over a significant amount of time.

HIPs are a key component of our identity as a college. CGCC is dedicated to providing the best experience possible to students and we have invested greatly in HIPs. Both MCCCD’s strategic plan and CGCC’s learning plan outline our dedication to utilizing HIPs to improve student outcomes.

Learn more about HIPs through the AACU’s website.

ePortfolios enable students to electronically collect their work over time, allowing them to reflect on their personal and academic growth, showcase their achievements and share their materials with others, like professors, advisors and potential employers. At CGCC, students create and build their ePortfolio(s) as part of course assignments, co-curricular program and FOI activities.
