Vice President of Academic Affairs
Dr. Ty Welborn serves as Vice President of Academic Affairs at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, where he provides executive leadership for academic programs, curriculum, teaching and learning, assessment, accreditation, and academic planning.
A community college educator for 25 years, Dr. Welborn came to academic administration through the classroom. He spent 18 years as faculty in both occupational and academic disciplines, an experience that still shapes how he leads. Having taken part in faculty leadership at multiple institutions, he builds his practice around shared governance, academic freedom, and respect for faculty expertise.
Before joining CGCC, he served Phoenix College as Interim Senior Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Institutional Research, Interim Dean of Academic Affairs, and Higher Learning Commission Accreditation Liaison Officer, following earlier leadership roles at community colleges in Texas. The work he values most was collaborative: guiding faculty teams through Phoenix College's first baccalaureate degrees, redesigning program review around student equity, and supporting national initiatives such as Achieving the Dream and Seal of Excelencia.
He holds a Ph.D. in U.S. History from the University of Houston and remains an active historian, presenting regularly at conferences.
Born in Kentucky and raised in Texas, Ty has lived in the Phoenix area for nearly ten years. Outside of work he enjoys time with his sons, music, travel, jogging, and hiking. A first-generation college graduate and U.S. Army veteran, Dr. Welborn knows the community college as the place where access becomes opportunity, and he is committed to serving students who arrive at CGCC by many different paths.
